The Morgan Manning House in Brockport

The West Monroe Historical Society is in the Morgan Manning House in Brockport at the corner of Main and South streets.

Cousin Reed Sutherland of Saratoga Springs New York has come into possession of two portraits that used to hang in the Wood Room on the third floor or Arthur and Susanne's home at 12 Berkeley Street in Cambridge, Massachusetts and following that were in her father's home.

Her father David's will requested they be offered to the historical society in Brockport. They are reportedly Kingsbury portraits.

Reed will photograph them for us.

So let's find out a bit more about this. What is the connection?

Susanne Adams Sutherland's mother was "Icky" a nickname for Ida Kingsbury Adams.

Ida's father was a Kingsbury, and her mother was a Graves.

John Henry Kingsbury (1844-1902) was a prominent leader in Brockport, many years the village president, and also the co founder of a private bank with George Allen.

Ida's sister Emily May Kingsbury (1875-1937) married Henry Morgan (1871-1927)  (LLB from Yale).

Emily's father-in-law, Dayton Samuel Morgan bought the "Morgan Manning" home in 1867, 13 years after it was built, and 3 years after renting it.

So Susanne Adams' maternal aunt, a Kingsbury, married into the Morgan family that bought the house.

From the home website:

"The Morgan Homestead was built in 1854 by John Ostrom. After Mr. Ostrom's death in 1862, his daughter, Julia Ostrom Eldridge, rented the house to a Dr. Olden for a short time. In 1864, Mrs. Eldridge sold the house to James Guild of Pennsylvania. Mr. Guild then rented rooms to Dayton Samuel Morgan and his bride, Susan Joslyn Morgan. Mr. Morgan was the proprietor of the D. S. Morgan company, an early manufacturer of mechanized reapers.

Three years later, in 1867, Mr. Morgan purchased the house from Mr. Guild, and it remained in the Morgan family until the fire of 1964. The house was badly damaged, and Sara Morgan Manning, the last Morgan inhabitant of the house, died as a result of the fire."

Emily and Henry had four children, including  a son named Dayton Morgan (1904-1934) who died a year after his mother died.

Martha Shannon (1899-1989) (Her husband died in 2003)
Emily Kingsbury (1905-1994) (Her son Henry M Morley died in 2005)

[ACTION: I'll be researching Sara Morgan Manning who died after 1964.
Also we're hoping to discover who the portraits are of.
Possibly: John Henry Kingsbury (1844-1902) and his wife Emily Haight Graves (1850-1927) or
Samuel Kingsbury III (1805-1855) and Phebe Spaulding (1809-?)].
